Michele Berton was born in Padua in 1954; he soon leaves it first for Rome and then for Milan. In 1976 he embraced Buddhism, moved to Florence and enrolled in the faculty of Modern Literature. In Florence he forms a partnership with the painter Martin Bradley who will follow him until 1984. Together with the master Miyashita he studies and practices the art of Japanese calligraphy, at the same time deepening the Japanese culture and language under Fosco Maraini’s guidance. He returns to live in Milan, where he also obtains a Master in Business Communication. His artistic expression is accompanied by an intense teaching activity (European Academy of Arts and Media in Milan and Novara, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Accademia Carrara di Bergamo) with courses focused on the theory of perception and psychology of form, on Max Luscher’s theory and color test. For Berton it is the action of painting that creates the forms: in his work, action and form are the same thing. And then the color, or rather the colors, bright, decisive, fluctuating. “His paintings favor our mental concentration, as do oriental mandalas” writes the art critic Tommaso Trini. Berton also designs and creates jewels as precious sculptures to wear, cosmic narratives, a sort of spatial artifacts with soft geometries embellished with galaxies of diamonds and other stones.
